To my future kids and the kids of the future,

If I have you or not I still want to make the promise that I will do all I can to make the world a better place for you to live and have your own families in.

I am part of the first generation that can feel the effects of overconsumption and see how that abuse is changing the world around me. I also know that I am part of the last generation that will be able to do anything to help reign in the effects for future generations.

I want to talk to you about sustainability and how the way that my generation approaches it and how I hope that we will change that. Currently we see sustainability as just a word, it is a buzzword and because of this word has really lost its weight and meaning. As a society we have forgotten that the actions we take now will affect the generations that exist after us.

To me sustainability is the ability to provide for the current generations without inhibiting future generations to provide for themselves. I am to live my life remembering that all i do effects those ahead of me. Hopefully people will begin to realise that if we do not live within our generations’ means it will affect the economy and society as a whole.

I personally have decided to make the transition into being vegan so that I can lower my carbon footprint, I am pesciterian right now but hopefully soon I will have totally transitioned. I also started using shampoo bars and conditioner bars to minimize plastic use in my bathroom, the only plastic in there now is my face stuff. Everytime someone asks me about things like this I ask them if they want me to go with them to find these things and make recommendations and i like to talk about it to keep people informed. I am not perfect at zero waste but that okay as long as we started to work as a whole society to get there.

I promise to keep working and to keep trying.

I love you lots and I hope your future holds so much for you.

More Messages to the Future

Dear Seamus and Tuva,

So it’s 2050. If the good people are winning the greater struggle, fossil fuels are a shamefully long chapter of the past, and there has been a full scale awakening to the need for only renewable, clean energy.

Dear Lillyana,

I will continue to work to make the Earth a cleaner and safer place for you to grow and explore.

Dear friend,

I will fight for this cause and I will never ever give up because we, the youngsters, are the hope.

Dear Evan,

What has most inspired me to act is wanting to be able to look you in the eye and say, “When I became aware of the existential threat of climate change, I did all I could.”  Despite my pessimism, I act in the hope it can make a difference for future generations and all the precious life on our fragile planet.

Dear Gabriel,

When the worst consequences of climate change still feel far away today, or the barriers to acting on climate change seem steep today, I do not think about today. I think about you, and your world when you are my age.

Dear Alanna and Valeria,

I promise you to keep trying, to keep educating, to keep pushing our elected officials to act and protect your health now and in the future.

To My Children,

Is the world really polluted?

Dear AC,

I think a lot about where the right place to live is.

To my precious children

I want clean air, clean energy and muddy feet for you. I want this for all children.

Dear Tomorrow,

I promise to change the culture of my school.

To my daughter and son,

Surrounded by scientists who shared my fears and visions, I often had a hard time to accept that outside our small community climate change received marginal attention.

Dear sons,

I’ve been so busy since 2012 working towards getting a price on carbon.
