Be assured that in the upcoming election, I will cast my vote for your future – for elected officials that recognize climate risks and are willing to promote and vote for legislation that will stop environmental damage and begin to heal our planet.

To My Dear Grandchildren,

I am incredibly happy that Nana and I can occasionally facetime, zoom, or chat with you to learn how you are doing and just catch up. The pandemic we are currently experiencing here in 2020 is something I have never experienced in my lifetime. While it can be scary and uncertain, I am confident that if we follow the recommendations of health professionals, eventually, we will find our way back to a more normal time – so that we can visit in person and share hugs again.

Even while we are physically apart, I want all of you to know that I am continuing to work to make our planet a safer and healthier place for you and your generation. As a volunteer with Citizens Climate Lobby, I raise awareness about climate issues, communicate and lobby our Members of Congress, and oppose efforts to ignore climate science. Be assured that in the upcoming election, I will cast my vote for your future – for elected officials that recognize climate risks and are willing to promote and vote for legislation that will stop environmental damage and begin to heal our planet.

Love Always,
Papa

More Messages to the Future

Dear Me of 2050,

I promise that I will plant more trees in places where there are none.

I pledge to use less plastic.

To My Grandchildren,

It’s my hope that the following will be helpful as you navigate your futures.  These are the confessions of a climate activist:

Dear Gabriel,

When the worst consequences of climate change still feel far away today, or the barriers to acting on climate change seem steep today, I do not think about today. I think about you, and your world when you are my age.

To the People in my Future Life,

Anytime I’m at the crossroads of life, I pray that I, or anyone else in the same position, will keep you in mind, and try to shape a world that’s the best possible for you.

Dear loved ones in the future,

Even if it pains me to imagine how things are back home in Puerto Rico at the moment, I know things will flourish again. The land will heal, but we need to help it.

Dear Levon,

I hope, as your father, I’ve done enough to instill within you how science is a wonderful adventure.

Dear Tomorrow,

I feel optimistic for you, tomorrow. I can feel a shift happening already.

Dear Future Self,

More than getting through a global pandemic that has already taken hundreds of thousands of lives around the world, our true feat is even larger: to secure our long-term health and the health of the ecosystems upon which we depend for life. To do that, we have to cut our emissions in half in the next ten years, and continue to reduce it beyond that. And to succeed in that, we need to fundamentally shift the way we do EVERYTHING.

Anya,

All you can do is your best. You can encourage the same in others. You can admit your mistakes and those of your ancestors. You can learn from them, and help however you can. I’ll do the same. I promise.

Salutations to whoever may be reading this,

I promise to do my part. I promise to be the change I want to see in the world, and I hope that you, reader, will do the same.

To My Friends, Family and Future Grandchildren,

I realize my reflection of the past, current and future state of the environment paints a grim and pessimistic picture, but I feel optimistic in our ability to turn planet Earth’s fate around if we all work together and commit to making a change.
