To My Child,

The year is 2018, and I am scared. As I hope to teach you at an early age, it’s okay to feel scared. The truth is, our planet’s current state is scary — almost as scary as it will be if humans continue to live the way we do now.

Yes, climate change is frightening; however, it is this very fear that inspired me to write this letter to you. This fear motivates me to make sustainable lifestyle choices and never forget about how my individual actions help and/or harm the environment. I crave to save Earth because you deserve to thrive in a safe world.

I want the air you breathe to be the cleanest air on earth, not saturated in toxins. I want the lakes you swim in to be the cleanest water on earth, not polluted with plastic. For these reasons, I promise to do all that I can — from feeding you plant-based meals to teaching you what to throw in the compost bin — to keep our planet safe. Because a healthy world fosters a healthy child, and your health is my main concern.

With love and optimism,

Your Mother

More Messages to the Future

Dear Eleanor,

You are so small. So innocent. So beautiful. For you and for everyone else, I will try harder.

Dear Daughter,

Even when contemplating huge global-historical issues — especially then — it’s important to stay grounded in the present time and place, the specific here and now, and the minute affairs of everyday interpersonal relations.

Dear Future,

I will use less plastic.

To what we’ve overcome.

The first step would be in overcoming ourselves. Because whether we end up fading into obscurity, or thriving in prosperity, we will overcome ourselves.

Dear Tomorrow,

I will encourage composting at work.

Dear Victoria, sugar pie honey bunch, chiquita loquita,

How can I look at your bright eyes and light dance and tell you we are facing a war?

Dear Tomorrow

I hope that environmental issues are a thing of the past.

dear future people (:

I hope that people are still enjoying the wonders that nature has to offer.

Dear friends,

We need to rethink our consumption habits in order to reduce the impacts on the environment.

Dear Devon and Chloe

I hope that my work helping to make your schools more sustainable will be something you carry on as you grow older.

Dear Generations to Be,

If we could all slow down, look around and connect: with each other, the Earth, the sky, the plants and rocks and animals, then maybe we can all remember to treat everyone and everything with respect and live in love.

Loved One,

That we all have a role to play no matter how small, we all can make a difference.
