to future generations,

The world is going to change. This change may be for the better or it may be for the worse, but the world will change. With increasing global temperatures, continued CO2 Production, and the constant loss of biodiversity, it can be easy to believe that there is nothing we can do to save the earth. The direction the earth seems to be going can be especially scary when those before me created a mess and left the aftermath to my generation. We will not let the same happen to you.

A drive for positive change is already underway. Globally there is a push for renewable energy, stricter laws on resource use, and more regulations on carbon production. My generation may not be able to solve all of the problems we are faced with, but we will try to take steps in the right direction.

I will do my part to make sure that our change leaves the earth in a better place for you. I will do so by being conscious of my actions, both big and small. On a small scale I will work to reduce the waste I produce, to pay attention to where my food comes from, and to limit the amount of electricity and water I use. I will also continue to fight for change on a corporate level and to teach others about the positive changes we can make. The world is going to change, and I will make sure this change will be for the better.

More Messages to the Future

Dear Tomorrow,

I promise I will take short showers, eat less meat, and buy local more often.

Dear Tomorrow,

I promise I will use less fossil fuels.

I promise to take shorter showers.

Dear Daughter,

Even when contemplating huge global-historical issues — especially then — it’s important to stay grounded in the present time and place, the specific here and now, and the minute affairs of everyday interpersonal relations.

Dear Before The Flood team,

We can all be aware and sensitized to the problem, so that we are ready to embrace the solutions that will come our way. In doing so, we can all be part of the solution.

We will look back on our time here and ask, “What did I do?”

If we truly live our present moment, maybe you’ll have a future.

I promise to plant trees and to turn off the lights.

Dear Luna,

I will never give up on you, on humanity, on the future.

Dear Jamie and Jason,

My inspiration was the two of you. It started with thinking about the world you were inheriting and what your future was going to be like. But then you taught me how important it is to listen to you – to listen to young people.

Dear humankind of today and tomorrow,

I do wish to contribute as much as I can, maybe even start a ripple effect, where other people will start taking action too and inspire other people too.

To my darling ones,

And it’s not that I don’t care. I care deeply. For you three, and the families I hope you will have one day; for the many beautiful places I have had the privilege to know, places which take my breath away, that fill my heart with a bursting joy and connectedness to something so much greater than I, places I know may be quite different when you are my age

I promise to plant more flowers.
