Dear Gorasia descendants,

It is 22:44 on 2nd March 2017.

I am writing to you from my university library, in between learning how to get a 1st class grade on an essay in a subject that I hope will rise to greater prominence and acceptance than it is today – that is environmental law. Setting hard laws rather than soft laws to enforce regulations in Treaty so that Nation States are obliged to cooperate (it really is sad that they don’t take initiative from their own affinity to our great planet Earth).

Earlier today I got laughed at for suggesting that climate change is more urgent now than ever, they replied with “it’s all propaganda”. Meanwhile, in reality, scientists and recorders have stated that we have just come off the back of what was the warmest year in recorded history (2016). When I was a child I wondered where the fumes from cars went, now, at the age of 20, I spend every day of my life trying to figure out ways in which we can collectively reduce the implications of said climate change. I say reduce because we as a species have already plucked so much of the goodness from our planet and its atmosphere. So, from this day on, I will not take my car to work: I will cycle; I will not use coal and fossil energy: I will use solar, reusable energy; I will do everything in my power to prevent the greed of governments from deforesting areas so crucial as ecosystems to the animals, plants and trees that make our planet the beauty it is.

I will do all that I can, and hope my fellow inhabitants join my pursuit, to nurture this planet in the hope that the day never comes where we have to ration for food because all the farms’ crops have rotted with smog in the air, or my great-grandchildren aren’t able to see Elephants with tusks or Polar Bears in general because greed has led my fellow Humans to remove the tusks for Ivory and infiltrate the Arctic for oil. If I can play a role in preventing this, and much more, from happening, I believe the world will be a better, safe place for the generation reading this in the future to come.

Sincerely,

Puneet Gorasia (your hero) x

More Messages to the Future

Dear Kids,

I know it’s long past time to wake up. You deserve a future in which drought, famine, and war are not all your children ever know; the choices my generation makes now will determine your future.

Dear Future,

“I knew you would want to know how the future turned out. You got so anxious about climate change as we grew older.  By coming back, I thought I could help you with that.”

Dear Tomorrow,

Don’t use plastic straws!

Dear Tomorrow,

I promise to sign up for 100% renewable energy.

My dearest Paloma Bear,

I want the very best for you and for generations to come. There is only one planet earth. Your mommy and I will make a genuine effort to make an impact to protect it for you.

Dear Tara,

Each of us only has so much power and the problem is HUGE, but I worked at this every day.

Dear fellow human,

May my tomorrow include more attention to these details so that you know that I do care.

I promise to take shorter showers.

Dear Birds,

will continue championing land preservation and the restoration of woodland, prairie and wetland habitats. I will not stop advocating for “bird friendly” legislation to make cities safer for your passage.

To my sons,

I’m voting with climate change as a top priority. I’ve tried to teach you boys that we need to clean up after ourselves and take care of the earth. I promise to continue doing these actions and more, for your sake.

To my precious grandchildren, Emma, Maya, Maddie and Will,

With love and a great hope for the future, a future that will be healthy and sustainable for you, my precious grandchildren.

Our Shared Promise

I will act today so you may have a healthy earth to live on.
