Dear Future Family,

If we keep doing business as usual, using fossil fuels, eating beef, turning our heads away from this giant elephant in the room, then we are in for one scary ride. I’ve watched “Before the Flood” just last night, it’s an eye-opener, and I’ve always believed in climate change, now more than ever.

I feel empowered because I am informed on just how alarming this could get. 400 billion tons of co2 emissions have been dumped into our atmosphere, and it’s all because of us. It’s surreal and depressing, but there are personal steps to help. I want to cut out beef from my diet. My husband and I just got a 7 kW solar system for our home. Once my gas car kicks the can, I’m switching to a pure electric vehicle.

Also, I’m writing this letter, because, from the bottom of my heart, I’m unsure of the future. We have the power right now to take action.

I wish nothing but the best for our entire humanity,

Sincerely,

Present Me

Dear loved ones in the future,

Even if it pains me to imagine how things are back home in Puerto Rico at the moment, I know things will flourish again. The land will heal, but we need to help it.

Dear Evie of 2050,

I can feel the change happening — many people are working to transform the world.

Dear Students,

I imagine at this point we have dropped our addiction to coal, gas, and oil and that our environment has made a turn for the better with the solar, wind, and other unimagined (at this point) alternative energy choices are in place.

I won’t leave my lights on.

To my beloved granddaughters, Margaret and Caroline,

Growing up in Germany, I often wondered what my parents had done to oppose the Nazi regime in the 1930’s that led to WWII.  I was so disappointed when I found out how passive they had been. For me, this was formative.

dear me in 2030,

I am smelling burning plastic!

To My Fellow Two-Spirits,

Thank you — Thank you — without you, I would not hear butterflies singing, without you, I would not understand black bear humor, or the creativity of jays planning their breakfast, without you, I would not feel flora whispers of long-lived wisdom on the back of my neck while sitting in Padmasana.

Dear future me,

If we don’t stop cutting down trees for agriculture and to build houses then the future generations will not think about trees when they hear the word Earth.

Dear Maddie,

Please know that I have tried very hard to be one of those people, to even make the smallest of changes in order to improve the world for you and your future.

To the generation after mine,

But when you encounter that resistance–and you will, regularly–know that you must respond just how we have had to these past 50 years. With love, and sternness, and most of all, courage. Because that is what the resistance fears the most. We who came before you promise that we will do the same while we wait for you. Know that you will never be alone.

Dear Indigenous Persons with Disabilities,

Dear Indigenous Persons with Disabilities,

Dear Donatella,

We ran through the woods laughing, crying, and living.
