As I write this, I consider giving up as it sometimes seems that all is lost. But then I think of you.

Dear Ezmae,

By 2050, you will be in your mid 30s. In my mid 30s, I was pondering what career would best support my three children, one of whom is your mom, Clare. I had a choice: journalism or nursing. I picked journalism, but nursing would have been just as amazing! Nevertheless, a quarter century ago I was not thinking about climate change and how it might impact my children and grandchildren. Now it is all I think about. I am fortunate to spend my full-time career on this most important issue, yet I disparage myself constantly for not doing more. Every day is an emotional roller coaster and I often end up on the low end of this thrill ride. And yes, here in 2018 as I write this, I consider giving up as it sometimes seems that all is lost.

But then I think of you.

You are almost four, but I feel as if you have been part of my whole life. You are brilliant and beautiful and funny and quite a scooter rider! When you see me you shout ‘Da!’ and rush to hug me. This is why giving up is not an option.

I will commit to not giving up, not going dark, not being overtaken by the demons of dread and regret. Because of you. Because of you I will continue to spend all my time on solutions. Because of you I will smile through this work, and model your joyful, hilarious nature in that work, so that others may feel that joy, that hopefulness, that sense of possibility.

Thank you for that, dear Ezmae.

Your Da,

Jim Poyser

More Messages to the Future

Dear Future Generations,

I promise to make as many changes to my life as possible to make yours as great as mine.

Dear future generations,

Past generations took all the trees, polluted all the water, fished all the fish, and hunted all the animals so that there’s almost nothing nice left.

Dear loved ones in the future,

Even if it pains me to imagine how things are back home in Puerto Rico at the moment, I know things will flourish again. The land will heal, but we need to help it.

For my most dear and only daughter,

And I know life more fully because of you whom I live on through.

Querido amanhã,

Sempre é bom ajudar a natureza.

We will look back on our time here and ask, “What did I do?”

If we truly live our present moment, maybe you’ll have a future.

Our Promise

I will turn my gas transmission into an electric car!

Dearest Finlay,

I hope you are healthy and happy and that you feel supported by the ecosystem around you because we are all deeply truly interconnected. We depend on the earth to take care of us, and nature needs us to take care of her in turn. We all need each other.

To all the people here on earth,

Who knows what the future would look like? or what will happened in the future? No one knows right? That’s why it it’s scary because we don’t know what lies ahead. We couldn’t stop the future but we can always change it.

Dear Future Me,

I promise that I will change my behavior to benefit our trees.

Dear Tomorrow,

I promise when I start my baking franchise, I will reduce pollution made by it as much as physically possible.

Dear Soren,

In this world that is changing before our eyes, I believe that is our task: standing unflinchingly on the side of love, connecting with others, and forging ahead together.
