Dear Eleanor,

This is the second message that Trisha Shrum has written to her daughter.

We started composting again to send that carbon back to the vegetable garden instead of sending it to the landfill where it turns into methane, a powerful greenhouse gas. You love to come with me to the community growing center to drop off the compost and play in the grass and dirt under the shade of trees. Giving myself a reason to go to this little oasis in our neighborhood a few times a week has been a lovely thing for my nature-hungry soul.

All my love,
Trisha

More Messages to the Future

Dear Tomorrow

Colin

Dear Kids,

I know it’s long past time to wake up. You deserve a future in which drought, famine, and war are not all your children ever know; the choices my generation makes now will determine your future.

To our future generations,

I want you to know that some of us do care and we are working towards a better future for you.

Querido amanhã,

Sempre é bom ajudar a natureza.

Dear Tomorrow,

I promise I will eat vegan, organic, locally grown, and seasonal.

Dear Potential Future Kiddo,

To think that my choices of sustainable commuting, eating a plant based diet, and working on our City’s zero waste program likely pale in comparison to the impact of not having a baby is nothing short of devastating.  Does it make me a bad environmentalist to honor my maternal instincts?

To my sons,

I’m voting with climate change as a top priority. I’ve tried to teach you boys that we need to clean up after ourselves and take care of the earth. I promise to continue doing these actions and more, for your sake.

Dear Evan,

We want your future family to enjoy the same beautiful places we enjoyed.

I pledge to use less plastic.

Caro Giovanni,

Dobbiamo aiutare nel conservare il bello che c’è nel nostro pianeta.

Dear Seamus and Tuva,

So it’s 2050. If the good people are winning the greater struggle, fossil fuels are a shamefully long chapter of the past, and there has been a full scale awakening to the need for only renewable, clean energy.

Dear tomorrow,

Unfortunately, our selfishness and excessive greed have closed our eyes to the well-being of the planet, and it has suffered the consequences.
